Toy Drive To Support Fort Gordon Christmas House

St. Luke's is participating in the 2006 Fort Gordon Christmas House by having a Toy Drive to help supply toys for the children of families of our military stationed in Fort Gordon, Georgia.

The Christmas House program started in 1966. A group of nurses from DDEAMC developed a program to assist military families who were unable to travel home for the holidays and were financially unprepared to purchase toys and holiday menu items. To apply, the military family must exhibit a financial need. Applications are accepted from October 1 to November 15, the deadline. Each family will receive a Commissary gift certificate, toys, or both for their children. The amount to be distributed depends on the donations received by the program.

The goal of the Fort Gordon Christmas House this year is to assist 300 families. I think this will be a wonderful project for our church to participate in, and will also be a great way for our church to be recognized for supporting the local community. It might even lead to some new visitors coming to our church.

Our part in this is to have a toy drive. I think our blog viewers can make a significant contribution to this worthy cause.

Toys need to be in the $10 range. When I spoke with them, they explained that when local churches have toy drives they tend to end up with a lot of Matchbox cars and cans of Play-Dough. Obviously, those aren't the kind of Christmas gifts that would really help put a big smile on a youngster's face, so they recommend the $10 price range.

If each of our blog readers would give just one toy to this cause, it would make a significant impact and spread a lot of joy to worthy children this Christmas day.

You can send your toy (it needs to be "unwrapped") to our church address below. I will collect the toys and deliver them to Fort Gordon for distribution. I will be sure and post pictures of the toys being delivered. Anyone participating in the program will receive a letter of thanks on parchment paper from our church expressing the church's sincere gratitude for your help.

Please participate if at all possible and help make put a smile on a child's face this Christmas. Send your toy(s) to the address below, and be sure to include your name and address so I can send your thank-you letter. Brigitte and I thank you very much for participating. God bless.
